Women in the Machinery and Equipment Appraisal World

March 6, 2014

NEBBI WomanJust a quick scan through the CMEA Search page on the NEBBI site makes one fact abundantly clear: the machinery and equipment appraisal landscape is a male-dominated one. Maybe there’s an overarching reason for that and maybe there isn’t, but either way, that’s how it is.

Of course, the days of thinking that women are inferior to men at anything are long gone, and women have just as much chance of success in this field as their male counterparts. But how do clients react when a woman shows up to appraise a heavy piece of machinery or some equipment on a factory floor?

Funny you should ask. A recent article titled “A few minutes with … a woman who loves bulldozers” in the Detroit Free Press spotlighted Theresa Shimansky, a machinery and equipment appraiser in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan. She was asked, “What’s the reaction when you show up at job sites?” to which she responded, “People look at me and go, ‘You’re the appraiser?’” When they ask, “Well, what do you know about this equipment?” she says, “Enough to appraise it.”

Granted, not every woman in the appraisal business is actually out there in the field performing appraisals, but it’s great to know that women like Theresa are out there shattering stereotypes and proving that they’re every bit as capable as any man.

Check out the article to learn more about this dedicated appraiser. in her own words, “[Clients] give me a hard time, and I say, ‘Look, you can either help me do my job, or you can hinder me, but it will be a lot faster if you help me.’”
